Well, the Metroid news has dropped… and Nintendo fans aren’t pleased. The trailer was lumped in with a bunch of other short 3DS teases, but there’s no denying it — we’re getting a new Metroid game. The real shocker is that despite hints from Nintendo, and even from Miyamoto himself, that we’d maybe be seeing both a classic siderscrolling Metroid and a Metroid Prime-style game released in the near future, Federation Force isn’t either of those; not really. Metroid Prime: Federation Force uses the perspective of Metroid Prime, but it looks to be a squad-based multiplayer shooter with an oddly cartoony art

Pokemon Silver — Chapter 2: A Wild PokeVirgin Appears!
Time to take the first steps on a terrifying Pokemon adventure. We’re about to leave the safety of New Bark Town behind. The tall grass awaits…
Pokemon Silver — Chapter 1: Pikachu Is a Punk
Here we go. Let’s get this trainwreck started! Game Freak presents: my public shaming on the internet.
A Series of Terrible Life Choices — Let’s Play Pokemon Silver
Somehow, I missed out on the whole Pokemon thing. It would have been right up my alley when I was a kid, too — only… I never had a Game Boy. It wasn’t until 2014, no less than sixteen years behind the curve, that I plugged Pokemon Blue into my brand new GBA and took the first step on my PokeJourney. I got about twenty hours or so into the game before the battery in the game cart died and my save file was erased. So that was the end of my PokeJourney. Until now. Rather than redo the bits
High Heels and Hard Light: Sexism, Pandering, and the Fall of Samus Aran
Samus Aran. Badass bounty hunter. Galactic savior. Hero and protagonist of a videogame series that has endured for almost thirty years. Samus Aran is among the most iconic videogame characters of all time. As far as female protagonists go, Samus is the earliest surviving one. Aside, I guess, from Ms. Pac-Man, but can you really count an anthropomorphized yellow blob? Samus is — at the very least — the oldest surviving female protagonist we can identify with. You know, since she’s human. Or at least humanoid. Back in 1986, even if you owned the original Metroid, even if you’d beaten
Oblivion
Oblivion is a Doom 1 episode by Stormwalker, who last year gave us the spectacular and surprisingly underrated Flashback to Hell. This is a lighter, more bit-sized release than Flashback was — one that you can probably finish in an afternoon, especially since it’s nice and easy on the challenge. It plays pretty casually, even on Ultra-violence, until the last couple maps, where the stakes rise, and rise quickly. In Oblivion, like Flashback to Hell, Stormwalker’s mapping style is unmistakable. Every room he creates is polished to perfection, without getting caught up in unnecessary details or going nuts with sector
Favillesco Alpha Episode 2: Desecration on Thebe
Favillesco Alpha Episode: Apostasy on Amalthea was my personal WAD-of-the-Year in 2014. I came for the promise of a WAD made entirely out of Doom alpha textures, and I ended up staying for Nicolás Monti’s one-of-a-kind mapping technique and bizarre stylistic sensibilities. This year he returned with an unexpected sequel, Favillesco Alpha Episode 2: Desecration on Thebe, and I had to know if lightning could strike twice. How does it measure up to Amalthea? For starters, Thebe ekes out a victory over its predecessor in the Length of Title category — one character longer! But seriously, as soon as you
The Blog’s New Clothes
As you may have noticed, digitaleidoscope has a new coat of paint. I tried and fail to tweak the old TRVL theme to my needs, but I just don’t know enough about CSS to really do much. Aplos, on the other hand, by default has better placement of widgets, allows me to display my pages right at the top, and even has an orange (yay!) and grey palette. So it was a no-brainer. Since I try to keep a record of what the blog has looked like over the years (really just for my own future curiosity), here’s a comparison…
Thy Flesh – Turned into a draft-excluder
A draught excluder or draft stopper is used to eliminate cold draft and slow heat loss. It is placed in the bottom crack of doors and windows. – Wikipedia All of a sudden, so much of my life makes sense… Like what the heck that long, sand-filled thing was in my parents’ hallway, that I used to pretend was a scary snake. Also what the heck the title of Thy Flesh – Turned into a draft-excluder means. The only remaining question: how the heck is this WAD so good? Matt “cannonball” Powell nabbed a Cacoward last year for draft-excluder, and
The Photography Page Is Live!
To celebrate digitaleidoscope’s independence from WordPress, I’ve added a collection of my photography. All the pictures from the photography posts I’ve done over the years can now be found in one place, along with some additional images I discovered on my hard drive and figured I’d throw in. There’s also a bunch of photos from a photography course I took back in 2012, which I’ve never posted before. If you’ve enjoyed my photography before, check out the new page! I think you’ll like it.
